All of us can likely remember our favorite super hero story.  If you think about it, most super heroes come from humble beginnings.  Velma Mae Boyd was no exception.  Born on a farm in Mansfield Louisiana in 1941 to Pearlie and King David Richardson, Velma knew all too well the spiritual connection farmers have to the land and the impact they have on their communities.  Growing up on the farm, she also learned about hard work and perseverance.  As a young woman, Velma left the farm to start a family in Houston, where she met and married the love of her life, John Boyd.  In her later years, Velma would long for those days on the farm and her connection to the land.  In honor of Velma Boyd, we have setup the Velma Boyd Memorial Fund through the National Black Farmers Association.  Your donation to this non-profit organization will go directly to farmer outreach to help educate them, build awareness of government and other programs, and fight the injustices that black farmers face today.
